CHARLES LEWTON-BRAIN
Charles Lewton-Brain, a Master Goldsmith and Artist from North America has trained and worked in Germany, Canada and USA.  His work is a remarkable combination of Process, Beauty and Function. He thinks of his work in metal as 'drawing', working with pen and ink to show mark and commitment. Many of his metal pieces use a 'printmaking' approach -  the work is done in separate steps with layers building towards the finished piece. He is concerned with process and the tensions between nature and structure. His work and technical research have been documented, marketed and published internationally via Brain Press (established 1994).
Charles has been recognised nationally and internationally as an artist, educator and cultural sector worker and has spoken at conferences in Canada, USA, England, Australia & Portugal. In 1984 he was granted Distinguished Membership status from the Society of North American Goldsmiths and Juried Membership Status in the Nova Scotia Designer Crafts Council, Halifax. In 1999 the Alberta College of Art and Design awarded him the "Board of Governors Award of Excellence", "in recognition of significant contributions to the arts in the province of Alberta". He has also won the Student Association's "Teachers Cup"‚ for outstanding teaching and inspirational work for students
He is a distinguished Fellow of the Society of North American Goldsmiths, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy (www.rca-arc.ca) and a Fellow of the Gemological Association of Great Britain.  He won the 2012 Salyse Bronfman Governor General's Award for Fine Craft, Canada's most important national award for Craft.
